Senator Laura Fine Votes to Hold ICE Accountable, Protect Families, and Uphold Justice in Illinois
Glenview, IL – State Senator Laura Fine (D-IL09) today announced her “yes” vote on HB 1312, legislation passed during the fall veto session to strengthen protections for Illinois residents against unconstitutional, extrajudicial immigration enforcement.
“Due process means something. Passing HB 1312 means that no child in Illinois should fear at school or daycare, that no parent is taken without cause, that we have safety procedures built into our schools and hospitals, that due process and the legal protections ensured under our Constitution can prevail as they should.”
Senator Fine has consistently backed measures that protect civil rights, improve transparency, and advance public safety.
The bill reflects priorities championed by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) under its S.A.L.T. – Safety, Accountability, Liberation, and Trust – platform. Community leaders and legal-aid partners have called the measure a “vital step” to hold federal civil-immigration enforcement accountable, reduce unlawful or unjust arrests, and build trust so residents can report crimes, access medical care, and keep children learning without fear or obstruction by federal enforcement.
“I voted yes on HB 1312 because public safety also means dignity,” Fine said. “I’ll keep working with advocates, local leaders, and law enforcement to make sure Illinois remains both safe and fair for Illinoisans, no matter where you were born or what language you speak.”
