Senator Fine Fights Back Against Massive Insurance Rate Hike
Glenview, IL – State Senator Laura Fine announced today that she will introduce legislation to address rising insurance premiums that are putting financial pressure on families across Illinois.
“This is personal for me,” said Fine. “Years ago, an insurance company nearly bankrupted my family. I know exactly how it feels when the system is stacked against you, when you’ve paid your premiums, followed the rules, and still get crushed when you need help the most. I’ve taken on this industry before and won, and I’m not backing down now. Today, I am introducing legislation that will aid and protect Illinois families.”
The bill ensures a fairer insurance system in three ways:
This bill starts a pilot program that will provide grants to help cover the costs of premium increases for Illinois' vulnerable renters and homeowners.
Prohibits homeowners' insurance premiums from being used for CEO pay, bonuses, stock buybacks, or political donations.
Requires insurers to notify policyholders of rate increases over 10% and explain the reasons in detail.
Fine has built a strong record in Springfield, standing up to the insurance industry. She passed legislation to ban junk health insurance plans, fought for mental health parity, and championed stronger consumer protections. Now, she says it’s time to act again.
“When companies raise rates with no warning and no justification, families suffer,” she said. “We need more transparency, more accountability, and we need to put working people first, not corporate profits.”
Fine is running for Congress in Illinois’ 9th District, and will bring her fight for economic fairness and corporate accountability to Washington.
